about

This was going to be the 6th album. I changed my mind. Parts of these songs appear on the full version of Inwood To Rockaway. Below are the liner notes to this first draft, written when I thought it was going to be the record:

(Written in April 2020)
Overturn a cup full of pins over a map of the United States. With just the right conditions, you might watch the pins fall on the subjects of this record.

This album is the first completely non-autobiographical record I've recorded. I'd tried to write short stories before, but they always went longer than I wanted, and ran out of steam before the ending. So, I decided to write songs as short stories, each one a character study. The ecstasies and agonies of their lives. The places and situations in which they live, and sometimes the locations and ways that they die. Or maybe they narrowly escaped death. You may have heard of some of them, some of them will be strangers to you.

This album was written and recorded over a few weeks using only my phone's built in microphone.

Special thanks to Mars and our cat Coco Bean for being the best case scenario for a quarantine. You both have made this much better and easier than it would have been otherwise. Mars, I love you very much.
