So, last time I believe I said, "This was a tough one." Don't worry, this isn't more of that.

After a year and a half of lockdowns, uncertainty, sadness, and strangeness, I wanted to make a record that reflected the peace I had found in my life.

Sports! is a collection of songs that lyrically focus on embracing joy and holding on to those we love in the face of loss, while still accepting that the same loss will continue to have an impact even as time goes on.

While Inwood To Rockaway was basically a document of my reaction to the loss of my mother to cancer, Sports! is me accepting and making peace with that loss, and choosing to embrace joy in the aftermath. It's also about accepting that this feeling of loss will continue to have an impact even as time goes on.

Sports! also takes a bit of a musical left turn from the more straightforward indie rock featured on previous releases, with more electronic and psychedelic production, inspired by artists like Glass Animals and LCD Soundsystem. There were definitely tracks on older records that hinted at this, but I finally decided to go all in with the B-side of Sports!

Another huge influence was my friend Erica, who writes and records as Boy Jr. Seeing someone be able to record in so many genres while having a solid and cohesive artistic identity really helped take some of the fear of "changing my sound" away. After that, I really let myself have fun with the rest of the record's sound, which I think goes in a way more pop and electronic direction than my previous albums. But if you like the fuzzy Interpol inspired stuff, there's still a few tracks of that!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy! Stay masked, get boosted, and hug the vaccinated people you love.
